UNREAL Peanut Butter CupHealthy Child Healthy World recently introduced me to UNREAL™ – a candy supplier looking to change the way we look at junk food by directly challenging the food industry – aisle by aisle.  “UNREAL™ is starting with candy, because it’s the worst offender when it comes to “junk” – corn syrup, hydrogenated fats, GMOs, artificial colors, flavors and preservatives.”  (Source: UNREAL™ Frequently Asked Questions) They are replacing conventional candy with an alternative that tastes just as good, but contains none of the things that harm us.  Key ingredients include things like real cane sugar, real milk, more peanuts, and twice the cacao.  You can check out the specifics through their snazzy infographics.

Naturally, I was curious about the total list of ingredients in these treats, so I made sure to go through the complete list for all products.  I was happy to find that they were all fine with me.  I was a bit hesitant that the soy lecithin might come from genetically engineered soy, but I later found their claim to be wholly free of genetically modified substances.  As far as candy goes, I’ve yet to find anything wrong with them.

UNREAL - I'm UnjunkedOn a daily basis, we do try to steer clear of candy altogether, but we’re certainly far from against it in principle.  I mean – everyone deserves a treat now and then.  We are decidedly going to support UNREAL™ in their efforts to “unjunk” the world.  And for those candy holidays, we now know where to go!  (You can read about our former struggles in Is Green Halloween Still Good Halloween?)

According to their site, UNREAL™ is already available at CVS, Michaels and Walgreens and will soon be expanding to a number of additional retailers.  I’ll be getting my fix in the mail shortly.  Although I’d be remiss to call this healthy, at least I’ll know it’s not harmful.  And there is good in that
